HIDDEN TREASURES is a documentary series on visual artists and collectors in Nigeria commissioned by The Foundation for Contemporary and Modern Visual Arts (FMVCA). The series focuses the first generations of Western trained visual artists who are the roots of contemporary art in Nigeria. Artists in the series have included Kolade Oshinowo, David Dale and Yusuf Grillo, the latest in post production is on Demas Nwoko. Collectors include the Obi of Onitsha among others.
The enigmatic 84 year old is one of Nigeria’s foremost artists. Yusuf Grillo was trained in at the University of Zaria. There he become part of the Zaria Rebels who rebelled against their Western training to each create a unique visual language of their own inspired by their culture. His art takes the form of paintings, sculpture, architecture and most recently a from of ‘stained glass’.
The documentary is a lively insight into Yusuf Grillo the man, his approach to his art and his inspirations. Yusuf takes the viewer into a personal tour of his environments and his works.
