Demas Nwoko

Synopsis

Demas Nwoko, painter, sculptor, architect. He can only be described as the “Renaissance” man of Nigeria. The documentary is part of a series by The Foundation of Contemporary and Modern Visual Arts, (Nigeria) whose mission is to record the legacy of Nigeria’s artistic legends – Demas Nwoko, David Dale, Yusuf Grillo among others. Demas was one of the first waves of Western-trained artists who broke away from the teachings of their Western training in the 1950’s to create their own visual language inspired by their individual cultural influences. They became labeled as the notorious Zaria Rebels, (which included Yusuf Grillo, Bruce Onabrakpeya and Uche Okeke among others). The documentary is an intimate portrait of the enigmatic 82-year-old Demas through his eyes and members of his family. We are privileged to get a glimpse of his unique approach to his work and his “Natural Synthesis” which is a template for all Nigerians to follow in whatever path they choose.
